Are you approaching your official braces appointment? Congratulations! Braces are a game-changer for your smile’s overall health and appearance. While getting braces put on can seem intimidating, you have nothing to fear! Here are our top 10 tips for making the first week after you get your braces a smooth and comfortable experience!

Tackling Your First Week with Braces

Braces will take some getting used to and there will definitely be an adjustment period. However, there are many things you can do to ensure you tackle the first week with ease!

1. Stock Up on Soft Foods

Your teeth will be extremely sensitive after you get your braces on. Make sure you have plenty of easy-to-eat foods on standby so that you can get the nutrients you need.

2. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Medication as Needed

Ibuprofen and Tylenol can help manage any pain and discomfort you feel during your first week.

3. Make Sure You Get Plenty of Orthodontic Wax From Your Doctor

Orthodontic wax is a lifesaver as your mouth gets used to the brackets and wires. It will help prevent any rubbing or scratching on the inside of your cheeks.

4. Gently Brush & Floss

Your teeth will be sensitive, so use a gentle touch when you brush and floss your teeth for the first week.

5. Stay Hydrated

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Cold water can help reduce any discomfort you may feel and prevent dry mouth.

6. Avoid Hard, Sticky, or Difficult-to-Chew Foods

Avoid tough meats, sticky candy, and anything that could get stuck in your braces or cause pain when you chew.

7. Rinse Your Mouth Out Between Meals

Braces can catch a lot of food debris. Rinse your mouth with water after eating to help loosen any stuck-on food.

8. Maintain a Good Oral Hygiene Regimen

Braces can make patients more prone to cavities because it’s more difficult to clean teeth around the brackets and wires. Take your time and make sure you are properly brushing your teeth to prevent decay.

9. Swish with Saltwater

During the first week, swish warm saltwater around in your mouth two to three times a day. Saltwater can help tackle irritation and swelling.

10. Be patient

Any pain or discomfort you’re feeling during the first week is only temporary. Once your mouth adjusts to your new braces, you will go back to feeling like your normal self!
