While athletic mouthguards and custom nightguards share the goal of protecting teeth, they serve distinct purposes. A sports mouthguard is designed to shield teeth and gums during physical activities. With a custom-fit sports mouthguard, you can protect the teeth and mouth from damage or injury caused by impact, collision, or falls. A custom nightguard is worn during sleep to protect teeth from grinding, also known as bruxism, and clenching.
How do I care for an athletic mouthguard?
Whether one of our athletic mouthguards or custom nightguards, taking care of any oral appliance is essential for its effectiveness. Before and after each use, it’s best to rinse the oral appliance thoroughly with cool water to remove debris and bacteria. It is safe to clean the mouthguard or nightguard with a soft toothbrush and mild soft, avoiding any abrasive cleanser. Dry the appliance thoroughly and always inspect it for wear and tear before use!
Can a nightguard help with teeth grinding?
One of the most common reasons custom nightguards are recommended is due to teeth grinding. With a custom nightguard, there is a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth to cushion the impact of grinding and clenching. Consistent use of a nightguard can help alleviate symptoms like jaw pain, headaches, and tooth sensitivity that often are experienced upon wakening.
